Minister of Youth and Arts Dr. Utumatwishima Jean Nepo Abdallah has called on young people to embrace education, hard work and patriotism as key pillars in building Rwanda’s future.
He made the remarks Tuesday during the launch of the Intore mu Biruhuko (Patriots on Holiday) program in Nyabimata Sector, Nyaruguru District. The area has in the past been targeted by attacks from FLN rebels, which resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of property.
"This is a crucial stage in a young person’s life,” Utumatwishima said. “They must be reminded to love learning and contribute to the broader goal of national development. Education is not only for individual benefit but also a tool for advancing Rwanda.”
The Intore mu Biruhuko program, which runs through the end of August, brings together students on school holidays to engage in patriotic education, cultural activities, sports and discussions on youth-related issues, including reproductive health and values.
The program is set to run three days a week — Monday, Wednesday and Friday — from 1 p.m., and is expected to reach more than one million young people nationwide.
“This is not just about keeping students occupied,” Utumatwishima added. “It’s about preparing them to protect the progress Rwanda has made and to become responsible leaders tomorrow.”
Youth participants welcomed the initiative. Rodrigue Ishimwe, a secondary school student, said the program would allow young people to connect and learn from each other.
“We’ll talk about things that matter to us, like reproductive health, and also have fun,” Ishimwe said. “It strengthens our unity.”
Eugénie Mutuyimana, another participant, said the holiday program would help youth avoid idleness and develop their skills.
“We’ll have time to showcase our talents through various activities,” she said.
The Intore mu Biruhuko program is organized by the Ministry of Youth and Arts Development in partnership with local authorities and community leaders. Officials say it plays a key role in reinforcing national identity and nurturing a culture of peace and civic responsibility among young Rwandans.
