Rwanda and the world began the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi on April 7, 2026, with a series of remembrance events organized by the Ministry of Unity and National Cohesion (MINUBUMWE).
The week-long observance officially began at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the site of the national commemoration ceremony. In the evening, a “Walk to Remember” will start in Gasabo District and conclude at BK ARENA, where an Evening of Remembrance will be held.
At the village level, activities will include talks and daily commemorative messages. MINUBUMWE emphasized that regular work and other activities may continue after remembrance events, and essential services, including pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, and hotels, will remain operational throughout the week.
On April 11, a remembrance walk in Kicukiro District will begin at IPRC/Kicukiro and conclude with an Evening of Remembrance at the Nyanza Memorial. Commercial activities, individual sports, team practices, and other income-generating work are permitted to continue during Commemoration Week. The national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout the observance.
Commemoration Week will conclude on April 13 at the Rebero Genocide Memorial, honoring also politicians who were killed for opposing the genocide. MINUBUMWE noted that no district-level closing ceremonies are planned and reminded organizers that remembrance activities should not exceed three hours. Candlelight vigils preceding the day of remembrance or burials must end by 10 p.m.
Government institutions, private organizations, businesses, and foreign embassies in Rwanda will hold remembrance activities between April 8 and July 3, with knowledgeable speakers leading the programs. Schools will also plan special remembrance days, including talks and visits to memorials where feasible.
After Commemoration Week, banners and memorial symbols will be removed but may be reused for future special remembrance events. MINUBUMWE encouraged all Rwandans, particularly youth, to participate in remembrance activities and follow commemorative programs broadcast on radio, television, and social media.
