Rwandan pregnant and breastfeeding women prisoners are receiving food supplements to keep them and their unborn babies healthy, according to the Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS). Convicted minors also receive food supplements, according to the recent ministerial order.

Commissioner General of Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS), Evariste Murenzi, says food supplement which is given to women who get pregnant before detention helps to maintain the wellness of the expectant mothers.

“We have been providing food supplements to concerned inmates even before the release of the recent ministerial order. It is in alignment with human rights recommendation,” Murenzi said recently.

He added that the food supplements are also given to other inmates with serious diseases approved by medical doctors, foreigners who are not able to take food ration provided by RCS and other malnourished persons detained by RCS.

The Minister of local governance Jean Claude Musabyimana recently told the members of parliament that the ministerial order had been enacted.

The food ration provided by the RCS is of at least 2,100 calories of cereal, legumes, water, salt, oil, and other food varieties necessary for maintaining good health.
