Rwanda’s women’s national tennis team made a strong start at the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup, defeating Congo Brazzaville 3-0 on the opening day of the tournament being held in Kigali.
The tournament kicked off on Monday, July 14, with 12 participating countries in Group IV, divided into three pools. Rwanda is placed in Group C alongside Ethiopia, Senegal, and Congo Brazzaville.
In the first singles match, Olive Tuyisenge dominated Marie-Noel Odongo in straight sets (6-0, 6-0). She was followed by Gisèle Mumararungu, who also secured a comfortable win over Theresia Amel Bankoussou (6-0, 6-0).
The doubles match saw Tuyisenge partner with Sonia Tuyishime to defeat the Congolese pair of Odongo and Bankoussou, again in straight sets (6-0, 6-0), sealing a clean sweep for Team Rwanda.
Rwanda is scheduled to face Ethiopia next on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.
The Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as the Fed Cup, is named after the legendary American tennis player Billie Jean King. It features a group-based format, with countries competing for promotion.
The winner of the Kigali tournament will earn promotion to Group III of the Billie Jean King Cup in the 2026 season.
