Rwanda on Thursday welcomed 326 of its citizens who had been living in forests in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), bringing them safely back home after years of displacement.
The repatriation follows an agreement reached by Rwanda, the DRC, and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) during a meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on July 24.
The returnees, from 98 families, crossed into Rwanda through the La Corniche border in Rubavu District, Western Province, before being transported to the Nyarushishi Temporary Transit Camp in Rusizi District.
Most are women, children, and elderly citizens. The government will provide financial support to help them reintegrate. Adults over 18 will receive $188 (273,483 Rwandan francs), minors $113 (164,381 Rwandan francs), along with basic food supplies valued at 45,000 Rwandan francs per person.
Since 2021, more than 11,000 Rwandans have returned from eastern DRC amid ongoing insecurity and displacement in the region.
The UNHCR said that as of August 2025, the temporary camp in Goma, North Kivu, was hosting 630 Rwandans waiting to return home.
Officials said the repatriation program underscores regional cooperation and Rwanda’s commitment to ensuring safe, dignified, and organized returns for its displaced citizens.
