The Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE), Dr. Jean Damascène Bizimana, has urged 438 youth attending the 15th edition of Itorero Indangamirwa to deeply reflect on the lessons of Rwanda’s history, reminding them that they represent the future strength of the country.
Minister Bizimana delivered this message on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, while giving a lecture on Rwandan history at the Nkumba Civic Training Center in Burera District, where this year’s cohort of Indangamirwa was officially launched. The group includes 204 girls and 234 boys.
Dr. Bizimana explained to the youth how colonial powers sowed division among Rwandans, which later contributed to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
“Colonialists divided Rwandans along ethnic lines, which destroyed national unity and eventually led to the genocide,” he said.
He encouraged the young trainees to remain vigilant against anything that could threaten Rwanda’s unity.
“Avoid anything that could plant seeds of hatred, division, or genocide ideology,” he said. “Uphold values of purpose and become role models in all you do — because you are the hands that will continue to build the Rwanda we desire.”
The training includes 104 participants studying or living abroad and others from international schools in Rwanda who excelled during Inkomezabigwi civic engagement programs. Also in attendance are youth leaders representing their peers.
During the 45-day program, participants will undergo basic military training, civic education, and lectures on Rwanda’s history, national unity, resilience, innovation, education, and the country’s long-term vision. They will also receive cultural and moral training based on Rwandan traditions, as well as skills to navigate life’s challenges and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Since its inception, Itorero Indangamirwa has trained 5,118 youth over 14 previous intakes.
