First Lady Jeannette Kagame has called on Rwandan families to prioritize emotional and physical well-being, describing strong households as the foundation of national development.
In a recent message, she highlighted the need for equality in marriage, urging spouses to share responsibilities and engage in open dialogue. “In marriage, everything should be 50/50. First, choose yourself, then find someone compatible,” she said, warning against outdated notions that women should give everything and men should command.
Madame Kagame emphasized that healthy family bonds support young people and society at large. She noted challenges in modern households, including declining communication and overreliance on social media, contrasting it with past practices where couples communicated thoughtfully through letters.
“Love and being loved are simple in principle but require effort and investment. Strong families generate lasting joy, resilience, and unity,” she said.
She also stressed the importance of providing safe and loving environments for children, which fosters independence, social skills, and academic success. Mutual respect, shared responsibilities, and thoughtful communication, she noted, strengthen relationships and benefit the broader community.
For couples facing difficulties or separation, Madame Kagame encouraged family and community support to help rebuild relationships with understanding and respect.
Through her message, she reaffirmed her commitment to promoting unity, happiness, and resilience within Rwandan households, seeing them as key to the country’s continued growth and development.
