Heifer International Rwanda has taken 12 finalists in the AYuTE Africa Challenge 2026 into a four-day training retreat aimed at preparing them for the competition’s final stage.
The retreat, that started running from April 20 to April 24, brings together young entrepreneurs selected from more than 1,200 applicants aged 18 to 35. All participants submitted projects focused on technology-driven solutions to improve agriculture.
During the program, finalists are receiving training in business growth, financial management and strategies for attracting investment. They are also engaging with leaders from various institutions who are offering mentorship and practical guidance.
Organizers say the retreat is designed to help participants refine their projects and strengthen their presentation skills ahead of pitching to judges in the final round.
“We identified a gap between where the selected entrepreneurs are and where they need to be to scale their innovations,” said Verena Ruzibuka, managing director of Heifer International Rwanda. “This retreat is meant to close that gap and prepare them to become investment-ready leaders in technology-driven agriculture.”
Ruzibuka said the initiative goes beyond supporting individual projects, contributing instead to broader efforts to modernize agriculture, create jobs and support smallholder farmers across Rwanda.
One of the finalists, Abdu Usanase, said the training offers a valuable opportunity to sharpen ideas and build connections.
“This retreat gives us mentorship, networking opportunities and practical experience to improve our projects so they can better support young farmers,” he said.
The AYuTE Africa Challenge — short for Agriculture, Youth and Technology — promotes innovation in agri-tech. Prize money for this year’s winners has increased from 50 million to 65 million Rwandan francs.
Organizers say the competition is intended to equip young innovators with skills and financial support to grow their ventures and contribute to the country’s agricultural transformation.
